First you start with the following ingredients
1 box of cake mix- any flavor ( I used White)1 jar of frosting- any flavor ( I used Vanilla)
1 bag of candy melts or Candy Quick- any flavor (*You may want to use 2- one bag just didn't cover it all and I had to "throw"some of the batter away- and I mean me and my husband ate it....)
**My thought on these were for St.Patty's Day so I had Mint Chocolate melts and I added Mint extract to the cake batter.
Step 1
You mix the cake batter and bake according to the box direction.
Step 2
After the cake is finished baking you remove it from the oven. While the cake is still warm, you scoop out about half of the cake and put it into a large mixing bowl. Add about half of the can of frosting to the cake and beat it with an electric mixer. Keep adding the remaining amount of cake and frosting and beat until it is all combined. It will look mushy.... but put it in the freezer or refrigerator until it is cool.
Step 3
Once the mixture is cold, you can scoop it out into little balls. I use a tablespoon ice cream scoop to make sure that they are all ruffly the same size.
Step 4
When you have rolled out all the balls (or if you have help and you can roll out the balls and dip at the same time) melt your chocolate in the microwave. *Tip- If your chocolate gets stiff and re-heating does not help, you can add some shortening to the chocolate to mix it up.
Step 5
Start your dipping! I use two forks to help get the excess chocolate off the balls. Lay them on a sheet of wax paper to let them cool. Once all your balls are dipped in the chocolate and set, I put them back into the freezer for about an hour.
Step 6
Enjoy!
These cake balls can be made in any flavor! I have even heard of doing them with Cheesecake and even Oreos! My next flavor will be Lemon cake with Vanilla coating (Candy-quick). Also, check out the amazing things you can do with them on http://www.bakerella.com/ .
